Portland : The Prospect of Civil War is more Scary than a Police State

America is raging.  The death of George Floyd has caused protests across the nation.  Cities are struggling to contain the chaos, and violence has infiltrated the peaceful aspect.  As expected, the unrest has Donald Trump exploiting the divide and feigning a necessity to put a lid on all those responsible for the problems.  But in actuality, a re-election strategy has emerged, and of course, it doesn’t matter the larger consequences.
Rolled out in Portland, unmarked federal agents and vehicles have been unleashed on the protest laden city, and people are being whisked away.  The troubling sight has many Americans expressing anxiety of having Donald Trump’s America descend into a police state.
One abductee doubled down from personal experience, according to the Washington Post. Twenty-nine year old Mark Pettibone felt like he was in a Philip K. Dick science fiction novel when agents suddenly appeared.  The young man soon found himself in a darkened vehicle with a covering over his face.
Wow, when did Augusto Pinochet move to Portland, but a more invasive fear does pervade. Oregon has many active militias who don’t take kindly to racial justice warriors, according to Tim Dickinson of Rolling Stone, and real danger exists.
So far, though, it seems that after a short period the victims are released to the safety of due process. The actual numbers show 43 arrested since July 4th. according to acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf.  Digging deeper, ABC news reported that federal court records reveal 18 people have been federally charged 13 of which are misdemeanors.
Not such an effective action, the Governor of Oregon is easily able to recognize Trump’s bad performance art. “Political theatre,” Kate Brown clarifies the charade for BBC.
Par for the Trump course, we’ve seen this bad B-Movie from the beginning. But while, “Lock her up, Lock her Up,” may seem the parallel, it’s not the one that strikes me.
So many infractions by this President, we’ve probably forgotten candidate Trump calling for the political assassination of his opponent.   “Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish, the second amendment,” extolled Trump to his cooing supporters.   “If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the second amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.”
Ok, Trump was more after a laugh than an act…or was he? Violent incitement has long been a theme and it has gone into high gear since the world was torn apart in March. LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege.
What a disgrace, and where is the broad condemnation from his party.  Unpatriotic cowardice suffices for the only explanation, so Trump obviously needed  a good one for the unrest.  “If there’s looting there will be shooting,” the President of Law and Order boasted.
Aside from the violent racial intent of the Nixon inspired moniker, the overreach in Portland has amounted to more than theater, according to Judge Anthony Napolitano of Fox News.   “What happened in Portland over the weekend, was not only unlawful and unconstitutional, it was just plain wrong,” said Napolitano. “Sending armed, untrained police into the streets wearing fatigues without the knowledge or consent of the local police actually caused more violence.”
The facts on the ground are corroborated by the reporting of Slate’s Mary Harris. She interviewed Jonathan Levinson of Oregon Public Broadcasting, and the correspondent conveyed the words of independent journalist Tuck Woodstock. “The impact has been that protesters have been reinvigorated. The crowds have easily doubled from what they were the past couple of weeks. So, contrary to the intention behind the federal government sending officers here to “quell the violent mob,” it has just galvanized the city, and the protests are gaining momentum once again.”
So in retrospect, the violent intent of the presidential campaign jab seems a lot more plausible, and either way, Trump’s cheering supporters always get the inside joke. The same goes as they see undesirables scooped up under the Law and Order flag of Trump.
Laughs abound, why not take the show on the road. Trump now plans to unleash his dark forces in other besieged cities. Still, popular support is the end, because the President needs more than a riled base.  Democratic cities all queued up, the violence will follow in kind.
So the images lend themselves to Trump being seen as the bulwark with his forces. The impetus won’t matter, and his violent playbook will be in position to pay electoral dividends.
That’s quite a strategy for a law abiding President of the United States to employ. The beating of Christopher David probably wasn’t part of the plan, though.
A former Navy Civil Engineer Corps member, David would have made Martin Luther King and his nonviolent army proud.  Not flinching or reacting in the least, David stood tall as he was beaten with a baton and pepper sprayed.
His remarks reported by the NY Post must have stung even more and made constitution waving conservative cringe.  “Why are you not honoring your oath?” David yelled to the officers. “Why are you not honoring your oath to the Constitution?”
Ouch and even Trump has to admit, the incident strayed from the plan.  So what happens if the unintended consequences multiply and ignite?  I’m pretty sure it won’t be funny. This, especially since America is already on enough of a Civil War tinderbox and all we need is a spark.
