The Philadelphia Eagles posted a first-place win loss record of 13-3 this year in what was not a competitive NFC East division. Still, the Eagles capitalized and solidified themselves as one of the top teams not only in the NFC but the NFL.
Although the Eagles finished in first place and were soaring high on their way to the postseason, the team went to arguably the toughest adversity for a team to go through as they lost their starting quarterback Carson Wentz. Wentz tore his ACL in week 14 against the Rams which brought his season to an end. The team had already clinched playoff berth, nut had to deal with the harsh reality of not having their quarterback there with them for a deep playoff run. No worries, here comes backup quarterback Nick Foles. Foles had an earlier stint with the Eagles, which included are pro bowl appearance in 2013. He was eventually traded to the then (St.Louis Rams) for fellow quarterback Sam Bradford. Couple years later, Foles was back in the fold in Philadelphia and this year, he made sure to leave his mark. This postseason, Foles performance was hotter than a fox in a forest fire, completing over 70 percent of his passes and throwing just one touchdown, which was not entirely his fault as it was tip-drilled off the fingers of wide receiver Alshon Jeffery in the Super Bowl game. Despite going into Super Bowl 52 as a number one seed, but still an underdog, Foles went toe-to-toe with probably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game in Tom Brady. Foles dissected the Patriots’ defense going 28-of-43 pass attempts with three touchdown passes. Let’s not forget Foles also caught a touchdown pass as the Eagles went on to stun Tom Brady and the Patriots by a score of 41-33 ending a 56-year championship drought for the franchise.
Just two years ago, Foles was contemplating retirement. This past Sunday night, He and the Eagles did just enough to get the win to be crowned as World Champions. Who would have thought that Nick Foles , the journeyman make his mark in making history as well as in the record books. He brought a city who was seething for a world title. He went from his future in football up in the air to being the MVP of the Super Bowl. He became the youngest quarterback 29, since Tom Brady (2001) to win the Vince Lombardi trophy. Rest to sure the Patriots will be back. At age 40 and coming off his best year as a pro, Tom Brady was named the league MVP. There’s no doubt Brady will do whatever it takes to return to the big game next year for a ninth time. The question is, will Foles be the starting quarterback with Wentz expected to be in the fold for years to come? All and all it was a great game and on that night, an unsung hero and the underdogs got it done!
